Development of citizenship competencesas a priority direction of the school

During the course of in-service training courses teachers took part in the training module «Development of Citizenship Competences in Ukraine» at Odessa Oblastal Institute for Teacher Improvement.

The participants were acquainted with the normative and legal principles of citizenship education, value orientations, the purpose and objectives of citizenship education, as well as recommendations on the implementation of citizenship education on the basis of a common-school approach. The teachers of the institute, trainers of the DOCCU project Larysa Kononenko and Maria Griniova worked with the audience.

During the practical part of the module, educators-organizers have deepened their knowledge in education for democratic citizenship and human rights education (EDC/HRE), developed an understanding of the essence of the core values ​​of a democratic society, responsible citizenship and democratic participation as the basic principles of sustainable development of the country. The organizers were familiarized with the possibilities of using educational and methodological resources from the EDC/HRE series, in particular, in organizing student self-government work, social designing and conducting EDC/HRE lessons in order to implement cross-cutting and action-oriented approaches to the formation of citizenship competences in school.
