UnConference in Odesa: «Education for Democratic Citizenship: School – Government – Community»
On November 22, there was held UnConference «Education for Democratic Citizenship: School – Government – Community» in Odesa.
During the event, the lecturers and participants exchanged best practices on cooperation between schools, authorities, and communities in Odesa Oblast. Leading experts in have shown how to shape democratic values and develop competencies in the educational environment through the continuous teaching of democratic citizenship and human rights through every school subject and out-of-school activities.
The head of project DOCCU in Ukraine, Natalia Protasova, said: «The main goal of the project is to create a new effective and responsible citizen of Ukraine who is able to participate in the life of his/her community and society as a whole through the creation of a democratic environment in local communities. As part of the educational reform «Modern Ukrainian School», the project implements the cross-cutting line «Citizenship Responsibility» and joined the writing of a new normative framework and curricula for primary and basic secondary schools. Now project experts are actively involved in the development of plans for high school».
The highlight of UnConference «Education for Democratic Citizenship: School – Power – Community» was a startup of new ideas, where was felt the significance of the contribution of each participant, based on common values.
Rolf Gollob emphasized that during the last decade education for democratic citizenship was implemented into the educational policy of almost all European countries. In Ukraine, during the last 9 years, the implementation took place within the framework of the Swiss-Ukrainian program «Development of Citizenship Competences in Ukraine». The project involves civil servants and officials of local self-government, school principals, teachers, representatives of non-governmental organizations.
Representatives of Odesa Oblast State Administration, local governments and united territorial communities of the Odesa Oblast, representatives of the public, experts, project master-trainers, students of secondary educational institutions of Odesa Oblast participated in the event.
