Serpneva Conference 2024. DECIDE project supported organization and holding of the most important event for Ukrainian educators

On August 26, Kyiv hosted one of the most important events for Ukrainian educators – Serpneva Conference, which was attended by over 300 participants and thousands of online viewers. The event brought together educational experts, teachers, representatives of public authorities and local self-governments, international partners, and others.

The discussions and debates of the speakers at Conference focused on important issues related to technological innovations in education, safety of educational process, and topical issues of restoring access to quality education in territorial communities. Mykhailo Fedorov, Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, presented the key directions of development of education system in Ukraine, focusing on technology, innovation and digitalization:

«The world is becoming more innovative and technological, and we need to respond quickly to new challenges. To do this, we need to transform the education system. Together with the Ministry of Education and Science, we are working on qualitative changes in each link. In particular, we revived the New Ukrainian School reform, and we are introducing technologies and removing unnecessary bureaucracy, modernizing higher education institutions, introducing education grants, changing the approach to the work of supervisory boards, etc. A special focus is on the implementation of Mriia, the app that will become a game changer for the entire education system. Our goal is to build a system capable of creating professional and happy people for the new innovative economy».

In current conditions of functioning of Ukrainian education, the help of partners is crucial. We are grateful to the Embassy of Switzerland in Ukraine for its continued support of our initiatives.

«When it comes to education, there are three sectors where we work: decentralization, vocational education, and digital transformation. You know that Switzerland is an extremely decentralized country and we have decentralized education. So, it is natural for us to be involved in such a process in Ukraine. We believe that decentralization is what ensures prosperity and sustainability. Within DECIDE project, we are working on decentralization process and democratic management of education. Since 2022, we have been supporting the resilience of communities in restoring education and rebuilding schools and shelters», said Felix Baumann, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Switzerland to Ukraine.

«Despite all the challenges of war, we understand that we may not have another, more favorable time to implement reforms. The students who are currently in the 7th grade will go to the 10th grade of the New Ukrainian School in 2027, regardless of any circumstances, and will choose between academic lyceums and vocational colleges. It is important that they go to a modern school where they will be interested in learning and developing. If we create all the necessary prerequisites for the development of specialized secondary education in a timely and high-quality manner, this will make it possible to lay the foundations for the restoration of our country and allow young people to build their future in Ukraine», — said Valentyna Poltorak, DECIDE project manager.

The event was organized and held with the support of the German government and UNICEF Ukraine, Swiss-Ukrainian Project DECIDE «Decentralization for Democratic Education Development» implemented in Ukraine by a consortium consisting of NGO DOCCU and PHZH with the support of Switzerland, and EGAP program, funded by Switzerland and implemented by the Eastern Europe Foundation.
